Envisioning Black Girl Futures

By centering the works of Black women artists and authors who speculate on Black imaginations and futures, Courtney Mauldin and Misha Inniss-Thompson (Cornell University) utilize this working group to foster a space of remembering for Black women who work alongside Black girls. This working group works with Black women community leaders and educators to engage in reflection and healing practices of their inner Black girl with the intention of reimagining  what liberated and freedom spaces look like for Black girls in Central New York.

Engaging the Multiple Literacies of Black Girls in Community

The project introduces a Young Adult (YA) book club called The Breedlove Readers, located in Syracuse, NY, where Black girls can participate in a collective space of reading, interactive discussions, and creative expression that reflects their lived experiences and explores themes found in the selected novels. By providing this platform for engagement, the project seeks to empower Black girls, foster their leadership skills, and promote a sense of community and self-expression through literature and art.

Unearthing Black Girl Literacies 'In Place'

Building from The Breedlove Readers, this literature + humanities project explores and amplifies the multimodal literacies of middle and high school-aged Black girls in the mid-south region, specifically in Shelby County of Memphis, Tennessee. By acknowledging the multifaceted nature of Black girls' literacies, encompassing their identities and drawing from historical, collaborative, intellectual, and political/critical elements, this project creates opportunities for Black girls in the Mid-South community to discover and express their diverse literacies through critical engagement with texts, speculative dialogue that encourages imagination, and creative expression in a supportive space that celebrates and validates Blackness and Black girlhood in all its manifestations.

Chapter 6: Leading for Change: Engaging Elementary Youth Voice in an In-School Makerspace

This case explores the ways that elementary youth of color provide critical insights in a school-based makerspace focused on change and leadership to transform practices at their K-3 elementary school. Through this case, readers will be introduced to the perspectives of eight third-graders who engaged in analytical dialogue and art making focused on change in their school, community, and society writ large.

Chapter 17: Black Lives Mattering in and out schools: Anti-Black racism, racial violence, and hope for Black imagination in educational research

In this chapter, the authors contend that the theory of Critical Race English Education (CREE) can be used as a method in educational research, curricula, and teaching to center and affirm the mattering of Black lives in the classroom and in educational research.

The authors offer ways that educators and researchers might grapple with the omnipresence of anti-Black violence in schools and educational research while inviting them to consider their own epistemological and ideological stances before engaging in both teaching and research.
